Belvedere College SJ has a long tradition of debating. It is available in all years in school. House debates are held regularly for Junior Cycle students (Rudiments and Grammar have joint debates while Elements debates take place on separate occasions). Inter -class debates and inter year debates take place under this format. 

The Annual Past v Present Debate takes place between the Past Pupils and Current Pupils in November each year. It has been running for over 30 years.
The school takes part in many different competitions. The details are below:

  • CHS Mace (TCD Hist)
  • NUI Maynooth Aoife Begley Memorial Debating Competition (prepared - Leinster style)
  • Phil Speaks (Mace)
  • Oxford Union Debating Competition
  • Cambridge Union Debating Competition
  • Wesley College Mace
  • Leinster Senior Schools Debating Competition amongst others.

The school has had much success over the years:

  • Dara Kelly won the individual category of the Leinster Senior Final in 2015.
  • Cathal McGuinness won the Leinster Junior Schools in 2015 as an individual.
  • Cian Henry and Barry Maguire won the Trinity Hist Mace for the school in 2013.
  • Mark A Kelly and Johnny Byrne won the UCD L&H Mace for the school in October 2011.
  • Belvedere College SJ has been represented at the Oxford Union Finals Day for the last 4 years, and at the ICYD Finals day for the last 5 years.
  • The school has been in the Leinster Junior Final every year since 2005 and has reached at least the semi finals of the Leinster Senior schools every year since 2008. Belvedere (team category) last won the Leinster Senior Final in 2010.
  • Since 2009, the school has run its own Junior Mace, the Belvedere Mace. 80 teams approx. participate in this competition and it is one of the biggest if not the biggest competitions of its type in the country.
  • The law firm Matheson kindly supports the school's Oxford/ Cambridge/ ICYD participation as well as the Belvedere Mace.
