Belvedere's Junior Debating teams have already been competing in various rounds in this year's Leinster pre-prepared competition. The four teams of Conrad Oppermann (GL) & Ben Whyte (GL), Eoin Harrington (GK) & Ben Ryan (GK), Fiachra Nolan (RDS) & Dan Byrne (GA) and Cathal McGuinness (GS)  & Doug Suffield (GX) have faced stiff competition but have acquitted themselves very well. There are three round robin heats and Eoin Harrington, Ben Ryan, Fiachra Nolan, and Dan Byrne have been placed (1st or 2nd) in the debates they've been involved in so far. Congratulations to all involved! Onwards and upwards!

CCC Junior Mace

Special congratulations to Dylan and to Eoin on being the joint 14th best individual speaker!
Congratulations again! Onwards and upwards!

Four Belvedere teams took part in the Wesley Mace recently. They were Cathal McGuinness (GS) & Dan Byrne (GS), Eoin Harrington (GK) & Ben Ryan (GK), Liam Schmidt (GF) & Chris Hutchinson (GL), and Fiachra Nolan (RDS) & Dylan Dimond (RDK). All speakers performed to a very high standard. Special mention should be made of Eoin Harrington who was 4th on the individual tab. That is a fantastic achievement. In addition, Cathal, Dan and Ben all spoke particularly well.

Well done to all involved!

Kilkenny College Junior Mace

Belvedere participants at Kilkenny Mace

Belvedere again entered the Kilkenny College Mace this year and did very well. The school sent 7 students down to the competition, these being Ross McDonnell (RDS), Evan BIrch (RDL), Andrew  Lynch (RDL), Thomas O'Connor (RDX), David Boylan (RDX), Sam Feeley (RDX) and Thomas Hegarty (RDS). Considering their previous lack of experience each participant can be very proud of how the day went. Ross, Sam and David all made it into a Break room and were in contention for a place in the Final. Well done to all involved! An excellent effort. Onwards and upwards!

Colaiste nahInse Junior Mace

Congratulations to Eoin Harrington (GK), Daniel Byrne (GA), Cathal McGuinness (GS), and Ben Ryan (GK) on reaching a Break Room in the Colaiste na hInse Mace. There were 40 teams involved in the event and to reach a Break Room is a major achievement.  Individually the lads did very well with both Eoin Harrington and Ben Ryan reaching the top 20 on the Speaker Tab. Well done also to Chris Hutchinson (GL) and Liam Schmidt (GF) on a very credible performance in what was their first competitive mace competition. Onwards and upwards!

Belvedere Junior Mace 2014

The Annual Belvedere Mace took place on Saturday September 20th. There was a large crowd present with well over 100 students involved in different areas of the competition. 4 intense rounds of debating took place over the course of the day culminating in a Grand Final chaired by the Minister for Health Leo Varadkar. Paul Reynolds the RTE journalist was the main guest judge and he was accompanied by other guests. Belvedere succeeded in getting a team into the Final with Conrad Oppermann and Doug Suffield. Unfortunately Doug had to be replaced at the last minute by Ben Whyte. The Belvo team spoke valiantly but unfortunately Loreto Beaufort won in the end!
Well done to all participants on an excellent performance! This was the 6th annual competition and it was a success. Hopefully it'll get bigger and better next year.

Excellent performance by Belvedere students in Oxford

Congratulations to James Kirwan (GF), Micheal Killarney (GK), Fintan Birch (GX) and Oisin Henry (GX) on their efforts at the Finals' Day of the ICYD in Oxford. It is very high standard international mace debating competition that the four students qualified for in March. Teams were drawn from Ireland, the UK, Germany, Greece, Canada amongst other places. There were 4 debates throughout the day breaking to a Grand Final. The 4 lads were a credit to the school with a tremendous performance reaching 14th place in the overall rankings, and taking several firsts and seconds along the way. A great achievement considering how difficult and tough some of the debates can be. Congratulations in particular to Micheal Killarney (GK) who was the best Belvedere speaker on the speaker points tab (peaking at 81 points; 26th out of 120)! An excellent effort!

Well done to all involved!

Many thanks also to the law firm Matheson for their support of the lads!

They spoke to an extremely high standard in the Final and just lost out on the winning position as a result of a split decision! However, they were exemplary in their approach and excellent representatives of the school. It was the best team result that the school has achieved in this competition.

Well done on a fantastic effort!

ICYD Finals Day - Cambridge

Congratulations to Dara Kelly (GX), Leon Langdon (GL), Saoirse Grogan Neilan (GF) and Daniel Culleton (RuF) on their superb performance at the Finals Day of the ICYD (International Competition for Young Debaters). Both Belvedere teams topped the Irish contingent. The event was held in Cambridge and the standard in the competition was very high. Topics ranged from gambling, to whether governments should rebuild communities in disaster prone areas, to whether we should ban websites that portray eating disorders in a positive light to whether we should focus our educational resources to employ teachers purely on the basis of improving the students' employment prospects. Very difficult indeed! Dara and Leon were in serious contention throughout the day and reached a Break Room only to lose out to the eventual winners of the competition. They came 14th in the team tab (out of 60) which is the best Belvedere has ever done in the competition. During the day Dara and Leon came 1st in the first debate, 1st in the second debate, 4th in the third debate and 2nd in the 3rd debate. On an individual basis, Dara came 22nd and Leon came 27th out of 120 which is superb achievement. Daniel got 22nd on an individual basis and Saoirse came 37th (out of 120) and the two lads came 20th out 60 teams. They came 1st in the first debate, 3rd in the second debate, 4th in the third debate and 1st in the fourth debate. It was an excellent all round Belvedere performance. Well done to the 4 lads!
