Belvedere Helps Temple Street Hospital Light Up

Belvedere Helps Temple Street Hospital Light Up

Took place 5th December

On Wednesday, 5 December 2018, nine Elements students joined English teacher, Barry Kennerk for Temple Street Hospital’s annual light-up event.

During the darkest days of winter, the front entrance is flanked by Christmas trees and the old façade is framed by lights. As darkness fell on Wednesday, a group of sick children, parents and friends of the hospital, gathered outside and listened as the Belvedere students, led by music therapist, Alison Sweeney, sang some familiar Christmas carols. Afterwards, the boys visited the hospital and saw several of the patients.

Belvedere College and Temple Street Hospital are two of the oldest institutions in the North Inner City. It is therefore fitting that we continue to involve our students in the life of the hospital so they can learn what Christmas is like for those less fortunate than themselves.

This year’s light-up event marks the end of an era for Temple Street Hospital which first opened its doors in 1876.  In the New Year, its staff will become part of the larger Children’s Hospital Ireland group (CHI) and in four years’ time, they will move to a new purpose-built hospital at St. James’ Campus, Dublin 8. In the meantime, the hospital continues to welcome students from Belvedere, with whose help the lives of patients are made a little brighter.
