Christmas Craft Fair 2018

Christmas Craft Fair 2018

Took place 1st December

Belvedere College S.J. were delighted to hold the annual craft fair December 1st in Belvedere House. This year the students produced jams, lemon curd and yummy buttery fudge. These were all prepared on Wednesdays after school in the weeks leading up to the fair. In addition to these food products, the Urban Farm were very generous and donated 60 jars of honey which sold very fast. The wax from the bees was also used to create our very own Belvedere beeswax candles. Thanks to Sam Grouse, our lab technician, for his big input into making sure we achieved this. The parents and grandparents also donated some delicious homemade Christmas puddings which were also very popular.

The crafts made also reflected the purpose of the fundraiser. The students handcrafted table runners and napkins from fabrics brought back from Uganda, where the Home Economics teacher, Ms. Lyons, had travelled to as part of a Jesuit teacher formation programme in November 2017.

The funds raised were donated to the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) in Uganda to deliver to a school in Adjumani, a settlement camp for thousands of displaced refugees at the south Sudan border. These funds will help build a science classroom. This money will help build the profile of the school and go towards the government recognising it officially as a school, therefore increasing funding from the government.

The Home Economics department would most sincerely like to thank all the people involved, the Parents’ Association for initial funding, the parents who supported the trade, in particular Brenda Mohan and Maura Carolan for their hard work in preparing crafts, Kris Vekic from JRS Ireland, Mr. Foley and of course all the students involved in making the products. A special thanks to Tom Mohan, Conor Carolan and Senan Coakley for spending their mid-term working so hard on the beautiful hand crafted patchwork quilt, which was raffled as first prize. Congratulations to Helen McEntee as our winner and second prize to Denise Sheridan for the beautifully iced Christmas cake.

It was such a lovely evening following the carol service, the atmosphere was very festive. Also thanks to Breda and her team for setting up the room so beautifully and all of the lovely Christmas treats that we enjoyed. Overall it was a great success and the €1,900 raised will be put to good use. Thanks again and hope to see you all there next year!
