Qualifying Quest Ends at Final Hurdle

There was disappointment for Castleknock's James McGee after he was beaten by Blake Mott 7-6 3-6 6-3 in the final qualifying round at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
With a 5-2 advantage in the first set, McGee had serve to close out the set, but Mott, ranked 286 in the world raised his game and starting going for the McGee's returns.
The Australian clawed his way back and won the set on a tie-breaker.
McGee, however, regained his composure and comfortably took the second set 6-3.With Mott cramping up at the end of that middle set, the Irishman sensed that for the first time he could book his ticket to the main draw. Mott though should great resilience in going for winners from the start and comfortably took the concluding set 6-3.
"I have to give credit to my opponent for coming up with the goods," McGee said afterwards.
"Going into the third set I felt I had a physical advantage because I wasn't cramping; I felt strong and fit and ready to go but he brought it."He started going for his shots because he knew he couldn't get in 20-ball rallies and 30-ball rallies, he had to go for the winner from the start.
"He did a really good job with that. It's a tough loss but I have to learn from it and move on."

Ireland's James McGee is just one match away from the main draw in the Australian Open after a straight sets win over Vincent Millot.

The Irishman followed up his first qualifying round win over Serbia’s Matija Pecotic (7-6 7-5) to dispatch France's Millot in emphatic fashion today, winning 6-2 6-4.
McGee, ranked 195th in the world, is now one match away from reaching thew main draw for just the second time in his career.
