Parent Association Talk 2019

Parent Association Talk 2019

Monday, 11th February at 7 PM

The PA would like to invite you to our next talk on Monday the 11th February 2019 at 7pm in the Lecture Theatre.

Guest Speaker: Elaine Byrnes, BSc., Msc., MPsI, MBPS, a Doctoral Researcher at the School of Psychology, NUI, Galway.

Topic: Consent.

Her research areas of interest include sexual behaviour, particularly in the negotiation of consent; and how this may be mediated by gender, drugs and alcohol in young people. She is the primary author of the SHAG (Sexual Health and Attitudes, Galway) Report, 2017; the most comprehensive study of sexual behaviour and attitudes undertaken in Ireland to date with a university population.

She co-lead the development of Smart Consent Workshops, and has been a facilitator of these workshops with third level students both at NUI, Galway and other institutions throughout Ireland. Her work on consent led to a nomination for the Outstanding Contribution to Student Life Award by the USI (Union of Students in Ireland), 2016.

Elaine contributes to the Human Sexuality, Social Psychology and Developmental Psychology modules as a lecturer. She was nominated for the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, 2016/17 at NUI, Galway.

She is a member of the USI National Advisory Panel 2018/19 (Consent) and was an advisor to the DARE (Dating Abuse – Raising Awareness and Education) Project with ProActiv Ireland.

Elaine co-facilitates a sexual health module with Richie Sadlier for Transition Year students at a secondary school in Dublin.

Elaine is also a TEDx speaker. Her key message in this was that we can reduce the risk of sexual assault and violence through comprehensive sexuality education – with consent at its core – for all young people. You can watch her Tedx Talk HERE.

She is an academic member of the Scoping Group commissioned by the Minister for Justice, to identify the prevalence of sexual abuse and violence in Ireland.

Our last talk for the year will be held on Monday the 8th April at 7pm in the Lecture Theatre. This will be a spiritual talk, speaker yet to be confirmed. We look forward to meeting you on the night.
