Silver Lining for Senior Boys Cross Country

Silver Lining for Senior Boys Cross Country

This year’s All Ireland Schools Cross Country Championships took place in Clongowes Wood College on Saturday, 9th March 2019. It was blustery cold day in Clane, but second year athlete James Bolon (Rudiments Kenny) started the day well with a 31st place finish in the Junior boys. This was James’s second appearance at this level and bodes well for his future at this event.

Up next was Ruairí Walsh (Syntax Loyola) who had a storming run to finish 24th after finishing 15th at Leinster. In what was a tough field, Ruairí made a massive improvement on last year’s finish in Waterford.

Our Senior boys stepped up next looking to win the team title, the Blue Ribbon. This year, there were four schools hotly tipped to take top honours: St Colman’s College, Newry, St Malachy’s College, Belfast, St Kieran’s College, Kilkenny and Belvedere College S.J. St Colman’s College, Newry, in many people’s eyes were the favourites.St Colman’s College Newry has won this race at the U15 level twice in a row when these teams met as second years in 2015 and 2016.

Belvedere came into the race high on confidence after winning Leinster. It was a great battle and the teams were separated in the end by 11 points, with St Colman's College coming out on top.

Belvedere’s second place win was our best ever result at this level. While the boys were understandably disappointed, they should be commended for the way they raced and also the commitment they have shown to training and racing over the last six months. Their disappointment shows how high of a standard they hold themselves to and this will hopefully fuel their hunger for next year’s challenge.
