Belvedere College - Rugby

Rugby

Rugby

Rugby is an integral part of sporting life in Belvedere College. It is a major part of the Belvedere ethos and all students are encouraged to participate and learn the game.

Rugby football is the principal school sport and as many as 25 teams, ranging from the Elements Panel to the Senior Cup Team, take to the field each week during the season. The strong rugby tradition extends to the 1890s when the first past pupil was selected to represent Ireland, the first of 29 so honoured to date. Since the inception of Leinster Schools Cup competitions, Belvedere has won the Senior Cup 12 times and the Junior Cup 17 times. History was made in 2005 when both cups were won, the Senior Cup returning after 33 years. In 2017 the Belvedere College SCT became only the 3rd squad from the College - and the first this century - to complete back to back victories in the Leinster Schools Senior Cup, the feat previously being achieved in seasons 1923/24 and 1971/72.

There is a full rugby programme from Elements through to Rhetoric. We can field up to 25 teams from first year through to sixth year. In first year we have been able, in recent years, to field up to 8 teams over the course of the year.
Training for first and second years takes place in Cabra and Distillery, while normally Junior Rugby, Senior Rugby and Transition Year Rugby all train in Distillery Road.

Home matches normally take place in Cabra, but occasionally a match may be fixed for Distillery Road.
Belvedere College S.J. has won the Leinster Schools Senior Cup on 12 occasions, the most two recent being in 2016 and 2017. This team has the distinction of being only the third side from Belvedere to win back to back Senior Cup titles.
Belvedere has also won the Leinster Schools Junior Cup on 18 occasions, the most recent in 2005. 2005 was the year Belvedere completed a historic Senior and Junior Cup double.

There have been 29 full Irish internationals educated in Belvedere, the most recent being James Downey, capped in 2013 against Canada.
There have so far been 8 former Belvederians who have also represented the British and Irish Lions. These are:  George Morgan, Andrew Clinch, Tom Crean, Willie Cunningham, Karl Mullen, Tony O’Reilly, Ollie Campbell and Cian Healy.
