ATHE 2016

Association of Home Economics Teachers (ATHE) 2016

I had the pleasure of attending the annual Association of Home Economics Teachers (ATHE) conference in Athlone Springs Hotel on Saturday October 15th. There were a number of keynote speakers in the field of Nutrition, Health and Money Advice.

The schedule for the day included presentations from:
• Margaret O’Neill- Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS).
• Dr. Kathryn McSweeney- Assessment practices and impact on Home Economics Education.
• Dr. Mary Flynn Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI)
• Glenis Henderson- Home Economics the Northern Ireland Perspective
• Dr. Emer Cullen- Home Economics and Health
• Professor Donal O’Shea -‘The Demonstration Project’
• Ruth Charles- Nutrition during pregnancy and Free Sugar
• JC Cert Craft Workshops- The Sewing Shed

It was a great opportunity to share resources and discuss current issues in both Home Economics and Education in general with colleagues and professionals in the fields of Medicine, Health and Nutrition. There was a wealth of expertise in the areas of Obesity, Heart Disease and Nutrition for Pregnant or Breastfeeding mothers.

The message that stood out most to me was the importance of Home Economics in teaching practical life skills. It’s role in the dissemination of nutritional information to the wider community, which is paramount in the fight against childhood Obesity and Heart Disease.
Exciting opportunities for Second level students to get more involved in National competitions and travelling were also showcased. The array of stands contributed to the atmosphere of enthusiasm and passion for the subject of Home Economics and the broad diversity the subject has to offer its students.

I thoroughly enjoyed the day and I am already looking forward to the International Federation for Home Economics Teachers congress (IFHE) which will be hosted in St. Angela's College, Lough Gill, Co. Sligo, March 2017. See link to ATHE for more information
