Neven Maguire Launches Home Economics Food Lab, Belvedere College S.J.

Celebrity Chef, Neven Maguire officially opened the new Home Economics Food Lab in the Junior House on Thursday 26th March 2015.
The event was attended by the Deputy Headmaster, a number of teachers, the students of ‘Tough Cookies’ cookery club and Home Economics classes as well as members of the parent’s committee.
We prepared for Neven’s visit by making refreshments. This included baking and decorating cupcakes, scones, preparing jam and making Chantilly cream for the scones. We set up a work space for Neven to demonstrate his cooking and we set up chairs for the audience to watch his cooking demonstration. A few students waited to greet Neven when he arrived to the school.
At the start of Neven Maguire’s visit, he cut the ribbon at the entrance of the new Home Economics Food Lab which was the official opening ceremony. Then he gave a tutorial of 3 simple dishes which were:
• Pitta bread pizza
• Irish Beef Stir-fry
• Pineapple and strawberry kebabs
He also gave a sugar-craft demonstration and showed us how to make sugar baskets and angel hair with the caramelised sugar. It was tricky to start but with Neven’s guidance a number of Element students mastered the technique.
During his cooking demonstration he held a question and answer session. He talked about how most of the ingredients he used were Irish based and was to help support Irish food production. After his cooking demonstration, Neven had a book signing for anyone who had one of his cook books.
Neven is very proud of his home roots and family. A student from Rhetoric Kenny gave rugby jerseys for his twins to wear and in memory of his day at Belvedere College S.J..
A student from Grammar Loyola presented him with a gift of micro-greens, edible flowers and herbs from our school’s urban farm. Neven was extremely impressed and asked to visit the urban farm, even though his assistant said he was already late for his next appointment.
Following the refreshments of tea, coffee and homemade cupcakes, he visited the school’s urban farm.
I enjoyed my day helping out with preparations for Neven Maguire’s visit to our school. The most exciting part was decorating the cupcakes for the students and teachers that had arrived to meet Neven, I was really excited when I got to meet Neven and I got my book signed and got a picture with him. It was really enjoyable to watch him cook in front of us and it was a privilege to taste the food he cooked for us. I was so amazed and inspired by Neven that I want to be able to cook like him.
Thank you to our teachers Ms. McNamara and Ms. Lyons for organising such a memorable day. I am really looking forward to taking up Home Economics next year and trying out some of Neven’s delicious dishes.
