The John Daly Prize for Creative Writing

The John Daly Prize for Creative Writing

Posted 23/10/2020

At the end of summer term 2020, the English Dept. and College librarian, Aileen Ivory, were delighted to announce the winner of the inaugural year John Daly Prize for Junior Writing.

The prize was awarded to Matthew Nolan, who is currently a pupil in Syntax Xavier.

The prize, aimed at Grammar students, is seen as a precursor to the George Dempsey Award for Rhetoric students, and will continue to form part of the six year English Dept. and Library programme here in the College.

Students entering the prize must submit a maximum of five pieces of writing each, and ideally display a diverse range of writing from the entrants. Fiction and non-fiction.

We owe the family of John Daly a huge debt of gratitude for endowing the prize. John Daly’s son, Eoin, was delighted to be present at the on line ceremony with teachers from the English Dept. and the HM of the College.

Here is a link to the winning piece.
